Who are SPARK?

SPARK is more than just a community; it’s a movement driven by the voices and experiences of neurodivergent individuals. We focus on creating meaningful connections and empowering individuals and organisations to embrace neurodiversity.

Meet Our Dedicated Co-Founders

Cara Marks

Cara has a background in recruitment and, as a neurominority herself, has a keen interest in neurodiversity in the workplace and barriers to entry for neurodivergent individuals. Cara seeks to support and advise organisations on how to create inclusive processes that will create more diverse and competitive workplaces.

A Brief insight into her journey

Cara was diagnosed later in life and has benefited from her diagnosis in understanding herself and combating some symptoms with newfound knowledge. Cara advocates for services in Northern Ireland and the opportunity for diagnosis to be more readily available.

Cara has a CIPD in HR and a masters in business development and Innovation from Ulster University, where she explored the gaps in the recruitment process compared to the experiences of the neurodivergent.

“Having a network for support and information is important at any stage of diagnosis, and you don’t always know when you will need that additional support. By coming together, we will have a stronger voice and make a real difference for Neurodivergent people in Northern Ireland.”

Gary Gates

Gary is a PhD Researcher at Ulster University investigating the lived experiences of late-diagnosed ADHD in adults. The research aims to deepen the understanding of the unique challenges and needs faced by this group, contribute to more effective support strategies, and raise awareness about the implications of late diagnosis.

A Brief insight into his journey

Gary’s background is in marketing, communications, and business management, and he has over 10 years of managerial experience. Gary now focusses his time on SPARK, his PhD, and various music projects.

He passionately believes in the transformative power of receiving a diagnosis and treatment. Gary is also a self-taught multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. In his free time, he performs with a bagpipe-infused rock/folk cover band called ‘The Tartan Riot’.

I dream of living in a world where ‘inclusive’ is no longer a ‘buzzword’ because inclusivity will be the norm. I dream of living in a world where societal structures and attitudes no longer agitate our neurodivergent symptoms. I dream of living in a world where each and every one of us can thrive and be the best version of ourselves.“
